Sample essay
Apple butter, while similar to applesauce, is more concentrated and is used to top crackers or toast with a buttery topping. It is slow cooked to caramelize sugar and make it brown.
You will also need a food processer, a slowcooker (with lid), nutmeg, cinnamon, sugar, and an apple. A food processor can also be used to reduce the time required for preparation. You will get a smoother apple butter if you mince the apples before cooking. If you would like to achieve a true butter consistency in your apple sauce, be sure to mince the peeled apples thoroughly before cooking.
Let’s examine the method of making apple butter. Preparing a large area to cut and process the apples is the first step. Apple butter can be made from only a few cups of apples. If you are making a lot of butter, it could take several hours to peel and prepare the apples. For a butter-like texture, each apple must be peeled and sliced in a food processer.
Add the apples in a slow cooker, and set it to “high”.
After the large pieces have settled down, the mixture will appear watery on the top. Add spices and sugar until you get the flavor you desire for your apple butter. The sweetness of the apples will vary, so you can add sugar gradually to the butter as it cooks. You don’t want to add too many sugars at the beginning, because butter will sweeten as it cooks. If you don’t want the final product to be too sweet, you can even opt not to add any sugar during this phase of cooking. Spices may be added during the cooking process or at a later time (if desired). Stir the apple-butter every 10 to 15 minutes in the first half hour of cooking it on high.
After an hour on high, switch the slow cooker to low. Cover it. Depending on which apple variety you have chosen, it will need to be cooked for 8-10hrs, or until there isn’t any water remaining at the top, sides, and bottom of the slow-cooker. During this time, it is important to stir every so often (once an hour will do). It is at this point that the kitchen will smell incredible!
Once the apple spread has reached the desired consistency, remove it. You can canning apple butter right away or in the fridge.
